Working With a Season of Change (Instead of Waiting for It to End)
Some seasons of change come with a clear starting line. A new job. A move. A decision you made on purpose, on a specific day, for reasons you could name. Other seasons are quieter than that. There's no single moment you could point to. You just look up one day and realize that work has shifted, your energy has shifted, your priorities have shifted, and you never actually said out loud that anything had changed at all.
Both kinds are real. But the quiet kind is easy to under-respond to, because it never asked for your attention the way a big, obvious change does. You keep operating like the season is still the old one, holding yourself to a pace or a standard that made sense before, and wondering why everything feels harder than it should.
The most common instinct in a season like this is to wait it out. Put the bigger decisions on hold, tell yourself you'll deal with it properly once things calm down, once the busy stretch passes, once you have more bandwidth to think clearly. That instinct makes sense. It's also often wrong, because seasons of change have a way of running longer than expected, or handing you straight into the next one before the first one fully resolves. If you're only willing to make decisions once life feels settled, you can end up waiting much longer than you planned to.
A more useful approach is to work with the season you're actually in, rather than the one you wish you had. A few things that help.
Lower the bar for what enough looks like, temporarily. A season of real change is not the season to hold yourself to your best-ever standard on every front. Deciding on purpose what gets less of you right now, and for how long, is different from just letting things slide.
Protect one or two non-negotiables instead of trying to keep everything. You can't sustain full effort across every part of your life in a demanding season. Pick the one or two things that matter most to protect, and let go of guilt about the rest.
Make the next decision, not the whole plan. You don't need full clarity about where this season leads to take one real step. Most of the clarity people are waiting for shows up after they've moved, not before.
If you're in a season like this right now, quiet or loud, the goal isn't to muscle through it unchanged, or to wait for it to be over before anything counts. It's to actually work with where you are.
